The Blizzard Network team is currently under a lot of pressure: Diablo 2: Resurrected has been experiencing server failures, login errors, and even rollbacks including data loss for over a week. Those who were unlucky sometimes lost a lot of playing time including valuable loot, which, according to the developers, can no longer be recovered. After the official forums slowly overflowing with cashIn the future, the developers decided to use a queue when logging in. This should protect the servers from many simultaneous requests, which should also avoid annoying failures as much as possible. This queue is now included in the PC version with patch 1.04, and an update for console versions will soon follow.

- We have implemented a login queue for high traffic periods. This queue will appear after the title screen when you open the game. The queue will only appear during very crowded windows.
- Players will be shown a number where they are in the queue.
- Players will have the option to exit the queue and play offline immediately if they wish by pressing “Escape” at the queue prompt.
- We should note that the higher the queue number, the slower the router will update the number. The number is still updating in the background, so we do not recommend leaving the queue as this will further delay your entry into the game during these highly crowded windows.
We expect a patch next week that will implement the same queue functionality for consoles.

When we checked into the game this morning, we ended up 16th in the online queue. After about 3:30 minutes we were allowed to play as usual, there were no other failures or errors as you can see in the previous days (eg long delays after a transaction with the dealer). Of course, if you just want to play offline, you don’t have to wait in queue. (Small update: On a second try in the afternoon, we immediately hit queue number 171. That number didn’t change at all for the next five minutes. Party in.)
Why queuing in Diablo 2: Revival?
Blizzard has already explained the reasons for this action in an unusually long (and somewhat belated) message to the community: Diablo 2: Resurrected still basically works with the original game’s old technology. This makes the new version original, but it is also prone to errors, for example if a large number of players finish their online games at the same time and start over immediately. However, this is often the case with experienced players who breed runes and other rare items and thus specifically repeat sections. From, for example, over and over again the Countess or Bendelsken chases, starts an online game, completes its objective, then finishes the game (which, by the way, should also be the best way to Avoid losing loot during undo operations) and start it again. This is of course nothing unusual with Diablo 2, but it is clear that Blizzard did not anticipate the sheer volume of inquiries.
