They often provide full story arcs as you know them from the main story questions. On the other hand, contracts sometimes require you to slay huge monsters.

The most peaceful missions are actually more rewarding in terms of XP than battles.
On the other hand, there are side activities that are very quick and easy to accomplish as they don’t require big fights. This includes Hatcheries, which features fun and rewarding sections that are platforms in themselves. Ruins are also puzzles that you can solve with intelligence rather than brute force by carefully studying the surroundings.
This kind of nonviolent action is the best way to earn XP to advance in the main story, since it doesn’t involve combat, is faster to complete, and offers better rewards for the effort. Relic Ruins give 5,000 XP, and Hatcheries range from 8000 to 15,000 XP, and also allow you to disable larger and more insidious machines.
It’s also important to keep fighting throughout your journey through the West – especially if you find a way to take down enemies stealthily. These encounters along the way are also a good opportunity to collect experience points and hone your skills in battle before venturing into the bosses.
