Longtime Virgin River cast members Marco Grazini, who plays Mike, and Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine, will not be returning for Season 8.
Spoiler alert: The story contains details about season 7 of Netflix's Virgin River.
Mike Valenzuela has solved his last case in Virginia River.Marco Grazzini, who starred in the Netflix romantic drama for five seasons, will leave the final four seasons as a series regular, after the current seventh season.
"He's not coming back for Season 8," Virgin Rivers showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Deadline.
Also not returning this season is Lauren Hammersley, a regular for the first four seasons and then returning, playing Charmaine for seven seasons to date.Smith said the two could return in future seasons.
The two departures after Season 7 match the total number of series regulars in the show's first six seasons, with Grayson Guernsey (Ricky) leaving after Season 4 and Mark Ganime (Dr. Cameron) after Season 6. (Jenny Cooper, who plays Mel's sister Joey, continues to return after a regular episode in Season 1).

The Cast of the River is quite stable, with few departures and only one new series additional cast (Smith joined as a showrunner after season 4, Candice McClure joined season 5 as Kaya.1, or John Allen Nelson, who plays Mel as the real boy Everett.
However, cast changes are one way a long-running series can reinvent itself. But that's not what Smith plans, as he's keeping the series fresh.
"For me, I'm trying to look at the longevity of the show and make sure they have enough of a story engine to continue the characters that we're keeping," he said."So I can't say that a specific cast change is planned, but I think we'll have to start, as the characters run their course, to make some decisions and bring in some new blood."
Along with Grazini, the rest of the series 7 Virgin River regulars are expected to return in season 8, including Ben Hollingsworth, whose character Brody was involved in a terrifying collapse in the final seconds of the finale.
Jack's (Martin Henderson) police detective and Navy friend, Mike, was introduced as a recurring character in Season 2. Grazini was promoted to series regular at the start of Season 3.
After dating Jack's sister Bree (Zibby Allen) since she arrived in Virgin River in season 3, Mike began dating her at the end of season 5 after she broke up with off-again flame Brody (Hollingsworth).
One of the season 6 finale cliffhangers, Mike's proposal to Brie was rejected at the start of season 7.His hopes of rekindling their relationship as the two join forces to search for Charmaine and Brie are finally reunited with Brody.Mike was last seen in the Season 7 finale happy with his return, Victoria (Sara Canning), the visiting doctor who told Mike about his feelings for her last year during her dressing down.
"Mike's probably going to put it on hold until we get something written," Smith said."We've developed such a deep relationship that I think this is just a happy ending to this chapter, allowing Mike to find his way back to Victoria and explore what happened there. But I love Marco, and if the creators are right, I could see his character reprising his role in a bigger role."
Along with Grazzini, Canning, who joined Virgin River as a season seven regular, is gone. Another new Season 7 regular, Cody Kearsley (Clay), will return next season as Jack's mysterious new ranch as he continues his search for his missing sister.absence.
"I actually found out a few weeks ago that he booked a series regular on another show, so he wasn't available for the first episode we were going to shoot, but we wanted him back," Smith said."He's a breath of fresh air and so much fun and good energy, especially for those who don't want to waste Hope and come back."
Out of Mel's (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack's adoption story, "out for now" is Rachel Drance, who appeared as Marley's mother-to-be in the last two seasons, with both parents from the show in Season 8, Smith said.
Also expected to return next season are Austin Nichols, who made a cameo at the end of season 7 as Eli, a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon who operates on Mel's newborn son, and Jack, who worked with Mel on Sisters Without Borders.
“He also booked something else, so we’re working around his schedule. We have such talented cast members that everybody wants them,” Smith said.
Charmaine has become one of Virgin River's favorite cliffhanger lines, as the character was involved in several major twists at the end of the season, most recently in the season 6 finale which involved her capture.(The previous one included the news of her pregnancy and the revelation of her paternity lie.) Charmaine was MIA throughout the seventh season until she was found and rescued by Brie.
If we're talking about characters who have "run their course," as Smith previously said, Charmaine, who may have come in the middle of her five-season pregnancy, probably a TV series record.
"Charmaine has no plans to return in Season 8, but that's not to say, when the time is right, I want more cliffhangers for the character and lies about the pregnancy," Smith said.
Check out the rest of Virgin River Season 7. A post-mortem interview with Smith about the season's biggest events, including Brody's accident and Mel and Jack's adoption journey, Season 8 headlines and a surprise new couple report, and the status of Everett and Sarah's prequel.
I like this book! We're in season 7 and the characters Mel and Jack still aren't the stable couple from Virgin River. Enough!Keep them stable and allow the other characters to be an extension of their steadying, loving, and nurturing influence.
