Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon was not happy after Tuesday's loss to the Edmonton Oilers.
McKinnon received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct after colliding with Edmonton Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram.
McKinnon was driving the net during a scoring chance when he connected with Ingram through the blue paint.Ingram immediately went down and appeared injured.
The referees awarded a five-minute penalty for goalkeeper interference, which was upheld after a lengthy review.
After speaking with the coaching staff, Ingram was able to skate the ice under his own power with visible cuts on his head.Tristan Jarry entered the game in his place and remained in the game at the start of the third period.Emergency substitute Benjamin Hause came on in the third period and the Oilers eventually won 4-3.
Speaking after the game, Avalanche manager Jared Bednar disagreed with the decision to charge MacKinnon five minutes.
"There's no way he can hit the goalkeeper if (Doornell) Nurse doesn't get to him," Bednar told the media. "I don't care if he's injured or not.If it's a bad accident, not a bad accident - it's not a penalty. If you put guys in your goal, it's not a penalty."
"The goalie is hurt, so that's five (minutes). Again, I don't really care if the goalie is hurt. It's on their guy, not our guy."
"They show how they want to react," Cale Makar added."Sometimes they miss things, sometimes they can't, and that's just the way it sometimes goes."
After the game, head coach Kris Knoblauch could not provide an update on Ingram's condition, but said he was in concussion theory.
"He's feeling good, obviously that can change, but he's not allowed to come back," the bench said, adding that the goalkeeper "feels good."
MacKinnon, who won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in 2024 and is in the running to receive it again this year, finished with 14:17 playing time and one shot on goal.In 61 games this season, the Cole Harbour, N.S., native has 104 points.
Ingram, 28, was the de facto No. 1 among struggling goaltenders, starting 18 games with an .892 save percentage and 2.78 goals-against average.
The Oilers also lost Colton Dutch and Ty Emberson to injuries in the game, while the Avalanche's Ross Colton left with an injury.
