The first details on the game's enemy encounters and the new CRTV device will support the evolution of the series' iconic radio.
Here are the first details on the game's enemy encounters and how the new CRTV device offers an evolution of the series' iconic radio.
I'm excited to finally be able to update on Silent Hill: Townfall after our 2022 announcement. Screen Burn may be a small development team, but they've taken their time creating a game that we can now confidently showcase. In today's Game Mode, we've released a new trailer that gives you a glimpse of the world that awaits. Please enjoy.
For further explanation, I'll turn it over to John McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn Interactive on Silent Hill: Townfall.
new chapter
With Silent Hill: Townfall, we at Screen Burn Interactive want to create a unique story that has been tested in previous games while entering an ambitious territory, with new cities to explore, formidable enemies to fight and escape, and puzzles that help create a new but unique Silent Hill story.
With our first release of the full trailer, we've given you a glimpse of what to expect, answered some lingering questions, and probably sparked a few new…
CRTV a - Reimagining Iconic Radio
The new trailer picks up where the 2022 teaser trailer left off and shows an old mobile TV with a hidden video signal on its screen. However, this time we get to meet its owner, Simon Ordell, and see the device in action.
Building on our previous experience of developing interactive "retro" user interfaces and a VHS-style aesthetic, we wanted to take the portable radio - an iconic tool from the Silent Hill series - and develop it in our own way.The result of this evolution is the 'CRTV', a lovingly crafted device that uses true retro technology and innovative techniques to produce dense, authentic in-game audio and video.
While the Silent Hill Radio is often a passive device that alerts the player to nearby enemies via a static sound, the CRTV takes this idea even further. Not only is it a useful tool in encounters - allowing Simon to "see" his surroundings and detect nearby threats - but it also collects signals from around the city that reveal more of the story and even help Simon with other challenges he faces.
A terrifying point of view
As you can see later in the trailer, the gameplay is experienced directly in the first person, through the eyes of the protagonist, which we feel best suits our narrative, puzzles and design intent.
The environments are rich in detail as players search for clues, and the narrative-driven puzzles feel tactile and intricate, requiring an attention to detail that only this perspective can provide.
CRTV in particular can only operate in true first-person perspective, allowing players to zoom in to scout, adjust signals, explore broadcasts, and gain an advantage in other scary situations.
Terror-oriented warfare - knowing when not to fight
This approach also lends itself to our new type of combat, where the violence is raw and disturbing, and there's no third-person perspective to separate you from the horrors of the city.
While there are many different types of weapons and ammunition for emergency use, combat is sometimes not the best option.Using a combination of CRTV, a number of environmental opportunities and intuitive surveillance systems, stealth is the same key strategy needed to survive.
With these different gameplay options comes different challenges from the enemies themselves.Pay close attention and they will aggressively hunt down the player, using their senses to track them down as much as possible.Having the option to run, dodge, hide, or engage enemies in combat - as well as to change tactics if things don't go according to plan - is an important part of what we consider to be an awesome encounter design.
PlayStation 5: I can feel it coming
To complement the experience, we've tried to make the most of Silent Hill: Townfall's DualSense wireless controller, taking advantage of its many features to add complexity to interactions, accentuate the sense of combat, and dynamically increase the tension of events.
Being chased by a fearsome enemy through the streets of a city is one thing, but feeling his legs shudder as he approaches your hideout out of sight is another!
That's all from me today, so I'd like to hand it back over to Silent Hill series creator Motoi Okamoto.
Although the story and setting may differ from Silent Hill 2 or Silent Hill f, this game will still retain the Silent Hill feel that players know.A rich narrative, challenging puzzles and moments of quick thinking during stealth come together to create a truly handcrafted experience. This game shines as one of the most aesthetically pleasing and sophisticated entries in the series.
Players looking for a more nuanced experience will especially appreciate this game, as it offers intellectual exploration through puzzles and analysis, while city environments and otherworldly imagery will entertain players through its beauty.
Wishlists open today on the PlayStation Store.Stay tuned for more information on the next release for Silent Hill: Townfall.
