In a retaliatory move, Ukraine launched drone attacks on Moscow and the border region of Belgorod, resulting in the temporary closure of multiple Russian airports. These strikes came just one day after Ukraine conducted an air raid on a military base in Crimea.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, an air defense system successfully shot down a drone over the Istra district. In addition, Russia claimed to have intercepted two more drones in the Belgorod region. The attacks also caused an alarming shelling incident in a border town, resulting in six people being wounded, as reported by Moscow.

As a consequence, flights had to be temporarily halted at three major airports serving the Russian capital and one near Belgorod. These drone strikes followed one of Ukraine’s largest coordinated air raids since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Russia maintained that its air defense systems were able to down all 42 drones attacking Crimea before any significant damage occurred. However, General Mark Milley, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, revealed that Ukraine’s counteroffensive has broken through Russia’s front line of defense and liberated a portion of Russian-occupied territory. Milley described the progress of the counteroffensive as “bloody, long, and slow.”

The Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia took place shortly after the attack on a military base in Crimea, further escalating tensions in the region. The counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces has intensified fighting in Bakhmut and southern Ukraine, resulting in significant advancements being made by the Ukrainian troops.

The U.K. Ministry of Defense has reported that Russia has also launched small-scale attacks on the northeast. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives when Russian shelling hit a cafe in the village of Podoly in the Kharkiv region.

The situation on the ground remains incredibly volatile, with both sides engaging in acts of aggression and retaliation. As the conflict continues to unfold, the ramifications of these drone attacks and the expanding counteroffensive are yet to be fully realized. The international community closely watches the ongoing conflict, anxiously hoping for a resolution that will bring peace to the region.
