George Santos has been a Republican member of the House of Representatives since November. But because of his fake resume, the deputy is already facing demands for his resignation. According to media reports, the FBI is now also involved in the lying scandal.
The FBI is also now embroiled in the case surrounding Republican Rep. George Santos, who is under pressure over his fake resume. Investigators are investigating allegations that Santos misappropriated money he raised for a sick Marine dog online, according to several US media reports.
Veteran Richard Osthoff told US media that he provided the FBI with information about the money. Among them were text messages Osthoff exchanged with Santos. Santos raised about $3,000 (nearly €2,800) online in 2016 for the then-homeless Osthoff to pay for an operation to save his terminally ill dog. According to the allegations, Santos stole the money rather than hand it over to Osthoff.
Pressure has been mounting on Santos since it was revealed that the 34-year-old had provided many details in his CV. For example, he claimed he was a “seasoned Wall Street investor.” The New York Times discovered that Santos was never employed by the companies mentioned. The newspaper was also unable to verify his university degree. Santos was also accused of misleading the public about his family history and alleged Jewish background. And the republican admitted in an interview that he had “lacquered” his resume.
Santos was first elected to Parliament in the November congressional elections. On Monday, media reported that Santos wanted to give up his position on two committees in the House of Representatives. According to recent polls, 78 percent of voters in his New York district think Santos should resign. So far, he has ruled out resigning.
