Chikungunya mosquitoes and dengue fever
As the range of the invasive mosquito species Aedes albopictus continues to expand, now covering 13 countries and 337 territories, the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention last month issued an advisory on the increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases in the region: Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. Aedes aegypti mosquito (the vector of dengue, chikungunya, zika virus and yellow fever) in Cyprus since last year. There is a possibility that this type of mosquito will continue to spread to other European countries.
Chikungunya is caused by the chikungunya virus and is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, America, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific.
There is no specific treatment or approved vaccine for chikungunya.

To avoid infection, travelers should use insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET or Icaridin Protection from insect bites.
