Vaccination for women before pregnancy Explained by the doctor

The obstetrician will talk about vaccinations as mandatory for women before and during pregnancy, their importance and how to protect the mother and child.

Pregnancy is called a vulnerable time, but a woman's body does wonders to grow a new life.During this period, changes in the immune system of women occur, which exposes them to the risk of many diseases.Vaccination, experts say, is a safe way to avoid such diseases.

Dr Sushruta Mokadam, Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, emphasized that women should not only vaccinate themselves but also their unborn child. "When a pregnant woman receives the recommended vaccines, her body produces antibodies in the first few months which are also beneficial for the baby as the newborn's immune system is immature," she says.

According to doctors, influenza, rubella, hepatitis, both COVID-19 and whooping cough can have a significant impact on pregnant women. “Infections in pregnancy can cause premature birth.Low birth weight, miscarriage, or severe illness in the newbornPrevention of these problems is always better than cure,” Dr. Mokadam advises.

She added that infection prevention helps prevent long-term hospitalization and reduces the use of antibiotics in pregnant women, which helps to keep both the pregnant woman and the baby healthy.

"These vaccines are recommended to be taken before pregnancy because there are other vaccines that can be taken while pregnant, but these are recommended before pregnancy. Counseling before pregnancy helps us to have this program safely," says Dr. Mokadam.

Addressing common concerns about complications, Dr. Mokadam said, "Most vaccines recommended for pregnant women cause only temporary reactions, such as pain at the injection site, mild fever, and headaches that resolve within a day or two. Serious reactions are rare."

In general, vaccinations during and before pregnancy help protect both mother and baby.Staying informed and following up with a trusted healthcare professional will ensure you and your baby get off to the best possible start to your pregnancy.
