Lindsey's OT touchdown run helps Minnesota prevent Michigan State's first win with 23-20 Big Ten win

MINNEAPOLIS - - Drake Lindsey scored on a three-yard run on third down in overtime after the game-tying rushing touchdown with 29 seconds left in regulation, and Minnesota held Michigan State scoreless in Big Ten play with a 23-20 victory on Saturday.

The Spartans (3-6, 0-6) had the first possession in OT but had to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Martin Conington, who missed field goals of 46 and 23 yards in regulation to take a 20-17 lead.

A third-and-4 pass interference penalty on Michigan State's Malcolm Bell kept the drive alive for the Gophers (6-3, 4-2), and Lindsay capped the comeback when he faked a handoff and rolled left on a boot that left him one-on-one with Spartans linebacker Darius Snow.Lindsay stiff-armed Snow to get the corner and score for the front corner of the end zone.

"It's so cool to watch Drake just put the ball in his hands and put the game on his shoulders," Jameson Geers said."He's a player, and he came out for us."

The Spartans, who totaled 467 on offense, went on a 10-0 run at the half and took a 17-10 lead with 1:52 left.Elijah Tau gained 85 yards on the first run, and Brannon Tulris scored on a one-yard run later.

But after Cunnington's play went out of bounds, the Gophers started with two timeouts at the 35 minute mark. A face mask penalty on Michigan State's Jordan Hall gave them a 15-yard advantage, and Malik Spencer's interception of a pass on second-and-1 from the 8 with 30 seconds left gave Minnesota its first down and first down from the 2nd half.

Lindsay completed 26 of 39 passes for 197 yards.

"I just love the scar, and the team," Gasritich P.J. "Black." You're really good, he's really good, he's really good.

After a 41-3 loss to fellow Iowa the week before, Lindsey started again with his heart and former Gophers quarterback Max.

"You still have to stay mellow," Lindsey said."This game is full of highs and lows, and if you ride that rollercoaster you're just going to get caught."

Fame Ijeboi had 108 yards on 17 rushes for the Gophers, had a 49-yard rush and a 1-yard run in the first quarter.

Brady Denenberg kicked a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter but missed a 33-yard attempt with 17 seconds left.

Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles had made 20 consecutive starts, but coach Jonathan Smith turned to Milivojevic after giving both players equal time in practice during the week. The Spartans got the spark they were looking for with 311 yards on 20-for-28 passing for freshman Milivojevic.

"He's got some moxie," Smith said."He worked hard. He was ready."

Milivojevic found Rodney Bullard Jr. on the sideline for a 71-yard pass in the third quarter to pull the Spartans within 10-7. Bullard had four catches for 102 yards and Tau-Tolliver had 127 yards on 11 carries for the Spartans, who had 10 penalties for 96 yards.
