Indiana's decision to avoid Cignetti's extension stemmed from the firing of head coach James Franklin this week, according to ESPN.

"It's a terrible decision by Indiana," Finebaum said on his show Thursday."I know college football geeks will disagree with me, but there's no way in the world Curt Cignetti is the third-highest paid coach in the country. He's not in Kirby Smart's league. He's not in Ryan Day's league. He has a big road win against Oregon...

"Look, I realize he can end up winning a national championship, and those who cover college football think highly of him, but that's not how you make good decisions. That's how you push your university to the limit and at some point you end up paying for it."

Finebaum explained the rest of Indiana's schedule in the Big Ten, claiming the Hoosiers had "literally no one" left to play with.As of Week 8, none of the remaining teams on IU's schedule were ranked.

Finebaum sent a warning to IU vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics Scott Dolson, suggesting he might be out of school in five years or so.

"But you're just going to have a feather in the sky about what? He didn't beat someone last year ... and I predict that a gymnast could be out of business in five years," Bowbaum said.

Finebaum compared Cignetti's new program to other programs with coaches in recent history.

"I'm just being realistic," Finebaum said."It's a shame somebody didn't say the same thing I said about Jimbo Fisher (at Texas A&M) or Mel Tucker (at Michigan State), or any of these other coaches that ended up with these stupid contracts."
