In an expert report, Deutsche Umwelthilfe DUH has documented eight previously unknown defeat devices in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class series with the Euro 6 emissions standard.
It’s an uproar in the diesel exhaust scandal at Daimler AG. On Friday, November 5, Deutsche Umwelthilfe DUH submitted a report prepared by automotive software expert Felix Domke on behalf of a US law firm, which made it clear that Daimler AG is more deeply involved in the diesel emissions scandal than previously known.
In summary, a total of eight previously unknown defeat devices were detected in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class series with the Euro 6 emission standard. In the advertisement of the Deutsche Umwelthilfe, it was said: “With these so-called ‘defeat devices’, which are clearly illegal in the opinion of DUH, efficient exhaust gas cleaning is reduced by the integrated SCR catalytic converter.Result: Real NOx emissions on the road are up to 500 percent above the legally stipulated limit value. To date, Daimler AG has always denied the use of illegal ditch devices on diesel cars sold in Germany and Europe.
“The report by Felix Domke is finally indebted to Daimler,” says Jürgen Resch, DUH’s Federal Director General. “It shows us for the first time how the group manages to comply with legal limits values in a testing laboratory, while virtually flooding our cities with harmful nitrogen oxides in real road operations.” There is no tampering with exhaust gas purification because it is necessary for physical reasons or for the purpose of protecting the engine. The reason is as simple as it is ironic: it is about profit maximization at the expense of the environment and the health of the city’s residents.”
“According to Deutsche Umwelthilfe, which has already done a lot for the rights of consumers affected in the diesel exhaust scandal, six of the found shutoff devices are connected to the SCR system. This urea solution reacts chemically with the exhaust gases, as a result of which both types of gases are broken down The use of SCR catalysts only works if the exhaust gas is mixed with an appropriate amount of urea, says Mönchengladbach attorney Dr. Gerrit W. Hartung of Dr. Hartung Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH (www.hartung-rechtsanwaelte.de). The law firm deals exclusively with investor and consumer protection issues and specializes in providing advice to those affected by the emissions scandal. Doctor. Gerrit W. Hartung has been considered a “diesel attorney” from the start.
According to Deutscher Umwelthilfe, three of the SCR-related shutdown devices rely on an “aging factor” that significantly lowers the threshold values at which the shutdown devices are activated. In two cases, this occurs after an obsolescence of about one percent in relation to the service life of the car – that is, after a few thousand kilometers. Another decrease occurs after about 20 percent of aging. The report continues: “There are two illegal stop devices associated with a vehicle’s exhaust gas recirculation system. There is no plausible physical cause for each.”
As reported by DUH expert Felix Domky. He says, “Defeat devices found in common driving situations are activated on the road. Even with normal driving, at least one defeat device actively always prevents emissions improvement – even if it is not physically necessary or to protect the engine.”
Diesel experts d. Gerrit W. Hartung is a real game-changer in the diesel exhaust scandal. “The fact that we are now talking about previously unknown defeat devices, which mainly affect Euro 6 vehicles, is remarkable and opens up entirely new opportunities for consumers who have suffered damage to hold Daimler AG responsible for intentional immoral harm in accordance with Article 826 of the German Civil Code. (BGB) and extensive reparations to obtain it.”
