The Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong passed through the Taiwan Strait on Saturday. Taiwan’s defense ministry said in a statement that the aircraft carrier was accompanied by two other Chinese ships as it transited the strait at noon Saturday local time. On their way, she added, they adhered to the unofficial border line between the two countries. The Taiwanese military watched the group of ships closely and “reacted appropriately”.
The Shandong is the first aircraft carrier to be built entirely in the People’s Republic of China in its own country. Last March, the ship crossed the Taiwan Strait just hours after a one-on-one video call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Beijing threatens to conquer Taiwan
Beijing considers the Island Democratic Republic part of the People’s Republic of China and threatens to occupy it. On the other hand, Taiwan has had an independent government for more than 70 years.
