Third-tier football club SV Meppen parted ways with coach Rico Schmidt on Monday. Emsländer did not advance beyond 12th place in the league and also missed out on qualifying for the first round of the DFB Cup.
On Monday, the club said on its website that due to the disappointing performance in recent times, the club’s management decided this unanimously. “At the end of the very intense consultations, the result was that SVM would not continue to collaborate and would like to take a different and new path when filling the role of Technical Director,” said Sports Director Heiner Beckmann. Meppener finished last season in the third division in twelfth place in the table.
SVM missed the DFB Cup under Schmidt
Last week, Meppen also missed the DFB Cup first round qualifiers after being defeated 1-0 in the Lower Saxony Cup final by local league club PSV Rheden. The 53-year-old Schmidt took over the team in April 2021. The Chemnitz native had previously coached Carl Zeiss Jena, Halleschen FC, Kickers Offenbach and Erzgeberg Oe, among others.
