Smiths Detection Inc. announced  Monday it has been awarded a $9.16 million contract from General Dynamics U.K. to equip U.K. military vehicles with its LCD 3.3 detection devices.

The announcement said approximately 589 vehicles will be outfitted with these detection devices, which are designed to warn crew members of a chemical attack. A two-year development program will include the detectors' mounting to ensure compatibility with the vehicles, which are part of the U.K.’s Ministry of Defense AJAX Program.

"This major military program provides Smiths Detection with a valuable reference system for vehicle integration. The importance of AJAX was recognized by releasing it into full production as a front-line vehicle for U.K. land forces. With continuing news of chemical weapons being used by terrorist groups, Smiths Detection's LCD 3.3 will play a critical role in keeping troops safe. We look forward to working with General Dynamics U.K. on the delivery of this vital program."

Smiths specializes in the design and manufacturing of detection and identification devices against chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological threats, explosives, narcotics and other forms of contraband.
