Federal agencies co-host conference on countering WMDs

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the U.S. Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (SCC-WMD) co-hosted the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Global Synchronization Conference this past week.

”Countering WMD is a global mission that spans across our geographic combatant commands, so it’s vitally important we remain synchronized in our ideas and our planning,” keynote speaker Adm. Cecil Haney said.

The conference brings experts on countering weapons of this kind from across military, government and international agencies and organizations twice every year. These conferences allow global efforts against WMDs to advance in their progress and, according to the report, the conferences have played an important role in Department of Defense efforts and their synchronization with other areas of the U.S. government and with partner nations.

“Countering and combating weapons of mass destruction has to be performed on a larger scale than just one single agency or command," DTRA and SCC-WMD Director Ken Myers said. "No region of the world is immune from potential chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear risks and no one federal department, no single geographic region, no single country can marshal the necessary capabilities alone to successfully fight the WMD threats we face in this day and age. This reality makes our synchronization efforts even more critical to our nation.”
