DHS awards ISAO SO grant

Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communication Andy Ozment released a statement Thursday announcing the creation of the Information Sharing and Analysis Organization's (ISAO) Standards Organization (SO) at the University of Texas (UT) at San Antonio.

The facility will be developing industry-wide standards that take into consideration the innovations found within both the public and private sectors within the cybersecurity field.

"The ISAO standards developed by the University of Texas at San Antonio will reflect the most effective and innovative ideas from the public and private sectors," Ozment said. "Through a public, open-ended engagement with business communities, civil society groups and other stakeholders, the University of Texas at San Antonio will develop transparent best practices that align with the needs of all industry groups."

The creation of the UT San Antonio SO is supported by Executive Order 13691 and aims to grow information sharing communities regionally and across the country, allowing the dispensing of threat-specific information when one is detected. Ozment states that ISAOs will benefit national efforts to expand information efforts against threats to computer systems and networks and would likely allow defense authorities to minimize a cyberattack's impact and spread.

Ozment urged organizational support for the standards development efforts and encouraged organizations and companies in this arena to form partnerships as the ISAO SO is established.
