OPCW director general meets with government officials during visit to China

Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Director General Ahmet Uzumcu met with Chinese government officials and spoke at Tsinghua University during his recent visit to China, the organization said Friday.

While in China, Uzumcu met with government officials including Deputy Director General of the Department of Arms Control and Disarmament of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Li Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi.
The meetings with government officials largely covered the role China plays in nonproliferation activities relating to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The leaders also discussed the progress that has been accomplished in the destruction of chemical weapons stock that Japan abandoned in Chinese territory.
Uzumcu also delivered a lecture to students and faculty members at Tsinghua University and discussed the importance reaching out to students, research and academic institutions and members of the chemical industry. He said this would facilitate the goal of gaining wide support from multiple aspects of society for the elimination of chemical weapons from global civil society and other goals off the CWC.
Uzumcu also met with Chinese Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation Vice Chairman Zhong Nan Hai. Hai presented an overview of the industry and the possibility of future partnership between the two organizations.
