Emergent BioSolutions appoints new executive vice president and general counsel

Emergent BioSolutions, Inc., a Rockville, Maryland-based specialty pharmaceutical company, announced the appointment on Tuesday of a new executive vice president and general counsel.

A.B. Cruz III will be Emergent's general counsel responsible for managing all legal matters involving regulatory, corporate and securities transactions. Cruz will also advise senior management on business and strategic issues, serve as the chief compliance officer for overseeing risk and compliance systems and policies and become the new corporate secretary to the board of directors.

Cruz recently retired as a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

"A.B. brings to Emergent 33 years of experience gained from the legal, business, and military fields," Daniel Abdun-Nabi, the president and chief executive officer at Emergent, said. "His impressive skill set, which combines the sound judgment of a proven legal advisor, the entrepreneurial mind of a business leader, and the leadership qualities of a senior military professional, makes him uniquely qualified to help advance Emergent's business goals and mission."

Before serving as reserve deputy director of maritime operations at U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., Cruz previously held positions at Scripps Networks Interactive, The E.W. Scripps Company and BET Holdings Inc.

Emergent BioSolutions offers specialized products to governments and healthcare providers to address emerging health threats and medical needs.
