PositiveID Corp. will focus attention and resources on developing the Firefly Dx system, which promises to provide rapid results of molecular testing, according to a company announcement on Tuesday.

Based in Delray Beach, Florida, PositiveID is teaming up with engineering firm Infinite Vision to create a prototype of the system by July 2015, with a full model available by the end of that year.

Firefly Dx is a handheld system designed to deliver real-time results of molecular testing. The data that the Firefly Dx offers will help hospitals and care providers save lives. PositiveID said results will be available in as few as 20 minutes at the point of care, a significant reduction from the usual hours-long wait for data results.

Infinite Vision, based in California, provides expertise in laboratory instrumentation, surgical tools and micro fluids.

"To ensure the expedited development required to complete the Firefly prototype and prepare Firefly for testing by potential customers and partners, it was imperative to work with a firm like Infinite Vision, which has proven time and again its ability to bring innovative and sophisticated products from concept to commercialization," PositiveID Chairman and CEO William J. Caragol said.
