New National Gallery with exhibitions open to visitors

NSErlen (dpa) – The new National Gallery in Berlin opens its doors to visitors today (10:00 a.m.) after years of renovation. The building, established by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969), had previously opened with a Saturday party. The architect created the stunning glass and steel structure at the end of the 1960s as a museum of 20th century art.

The team of British architect David Chipperfield completely renovated the museum in 2016 and repaired it for 140 million euros.

The artistic introduction consists of three exhibitions. “Art of Society 1900-1945” is scheduled to run through July 2023 with central works from the Nationalgalerie’s collection of about 1,800 works. The huge main hall houses the exhibition “Alexander Calder. Minimal / Maximal” until February 13 with the work of the American sculptor Calder (1898-1976). With “Rosa Barba. In a Perpetual Now” is the third exhibition dedicated to the artist in Berlin.
