These displaced individuals have sought refuge in United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) shelters, but the facilities are unable to handle the massive influx.
Living conditions in the overcrowded shelters are extremely challenging, with a lack of basic necessities such as toilets, showers, and clean water. Moreover, the approaching bad weather worsens the situation as the flimsy tents are unable to withstand heavy rain and the temperatures can plummet to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. These dire circumstances increase the risk of disease outbreak, especially among young children, as the shelters become breeding grounds for illness.
Alarming the situation further, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over dropping immunization rates and the potential spread of diseases like measles. The overcrowded shelters make it difficult to maintain proper sanitation measures and adequate healthcare, leaving the population vulnerable to diseases.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, has warned that the living conditions and lack of healthcare could result in more deaths from disease than bombings. The long-term future for Gaza’s displaced is bleak, as 45% of the housing stock is too damaged to be inhabitable. Families faced with the overcrowded shelters often opt to camp in the ruins of their own destroyed homes, preferring the uncertain safety provided by their devastated dwellings.
Even with the ceasefire in place, rebuilding lives and obtaining permanent homes will be a lengthy and arduous process. Gazans find themselves caught in a grim predicament, where the destruction of infrastructure makes it challenging to restore normalcy. The road to recovery for these displaced individuals is paved with immense obstacles.
As winter encroaches upon the Gaza Strip, urgent humanitarian aid and support are crucial to alleviate the suffering of the internally displaced population. The international community must rise to the occasion and provide the necessary assistance, not only to ensure their survival during the winter months but also to help rebuild their shattered lives and restore a sense of normalcy.
