HA French police officer has been fatally stabbed while trying to stop migrants from crossing the Channel to Britain. Le Monde reported that when an officer tried to flatten a rubber boat of a group of 60 migrants on a beach near Calais on Saturday, he was stabbed in the hand. The policeman, who was wounded in an artery, required surgery. The police tried to identify the perpetrator among a group of men, women and children.
During the night, the police had already destroyed three rubber boats ashore that the migrants wanted to use for the dangerous crossing from northern France to Great Britain. Le Monde newspaper reported that the attack on the policeman came during a quarrel with refugees, during which the officers used tear gas. According to the police, it often happens that migrants violently attack French officials who try to stop the crossings.
Paris and London recently agreed to jointly intensify the fight against unwanted immigration. Great Britain has been paying France for increased border protection for a long time. The UK saw a record number of around 46,000 migrants on boats last year.
