CNN is set to launch a new Fitness, But Better newsletter series, highlighting the latest research on the benefits of exercise. A recent study suggests that regular physical activity can significantly reduce stress signals in the brain, leading to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.
The study, which analyzed data from over 50,000 adults around age 60, found that individuals who engaged in more exercise showed a notable reduction in stress-related signals in the brain, ultimately lowering their risk of heart disease. Interestingly, the benefits of exercise were even more pronounced in individuals with depression, who experienced a greater than twofold increase in the positive effects of physical activity.
Researchers also noted that the benefits of exercise on cardiovascular disease prevention varied depending on an individual’s history of depression. Exercise was found to reduce stress signals in the brain while increasing prefrontal cortical signals, ultimately leading to improved heart health.
However, it is important to note that these findings are based on associations and not a randomized trial with a control group. Despite this, experts recommend getting at least 30 minutes of breathless physical activity each day to reap the rewards of exercise. It is also advised to find a physical activity that you truly enjoy and that challenges you in order to see the maximum benefits.
The new Fitness, But Better newsletter series from CNN aims to keep readers informed about the latest research on the benefits of exercise for overall health and well-being. Stay tuned for more updates on how to optimize your fitness routine for a healthier life.
