GLS Bank transgender and non-binary customers can now print their preferred name on debit or credit cards

GLS Bank was the first German bank to offer a ‘True Name’ feature to MasterCard. This allows transgender people and people without dual identification to print their own chosen name on their GLS credit card. It does not matter whether there is an official name change or not. GLS Bank customers can now easily make the change with help Supplementary identifier for dgti eV Apply for. This procedure has already proven itself for the giro cards in the SEB. It is also possible to change the name on credit cards starting today.

Background: For many members of the LGBTQIA+ community, the name on their credit or debit card does not match their real identity. This often poses problems for transgender and non-binary people. To avoid such embarrassing situations, MasterCard introduced a “True Name” feature in the US in 2019. It allows everyone to put their preferred name on their payment card.

According to a recent Mastercard study, 4.7% of all German participants stated that they did not identify themselves as a man or as a woman. They do not want to be identified as male or female only. In Generation Z – born at the turn of the millennium – there are a lot of people who describe themselves as non-binary (9.5 percent). 12 percent of respondents are bothered by the fact that their gender is mentioned on their ID, bank card or credit card.

Aysel Osmanoglu, GLS Bank Board Member, on the new offer: “All our customers should be able to use the name on their payment card with which they identify themselves and which they wish to transact with. The new feature is a sign of greater diversity, from In order to raise awareness of the different needs of our colorful community and to request recognition of these needs in institutions and authorities.”

Dr Peter Robejsek, Regional Director for Germany at Mastercard says: “Since the launch of True Name, we have received incredibly positive feedback from the transgender and non-binary communities that the new feature has made their lives easier. For transgender people who feel they were born in the wrong body and want Redefining their identity, the identity printed on their cards often does not reflect who they really are. This can lead to discrimination. And here we want to start with GLS Bank.” The goal is to promote acceptance of all models of life. “We are very pleased that GLS Bank has joined this initiative and is the first bank to offer this function in Germany,” Robijk continued.

Mastercard is already using the award winning “True Name” feature with several partners. They include BMO, BMO Harris Bank, BMTX, bunq, CITI, FIS, Marqueta, Monzo, T-Mobile Money, ONE, Republic Bank & Trust Company, among others.
