In front of the raucous crowd, Italy missed the semi-finals of the Davis Cup with top ten player Yannick Sener. The 20-year-old turned his singles on in Turin on Monday against former US Open winner Marin Cilic of Croatia, winning 3:6 7:6 (7/4) 6:3.
But then Sener and Fabio Fognini lost the decisive double to Olympic champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 3:6 4:6. Initially, Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego unexpectedly faced off against the world number 279. Borna Gogo lost with 6:7 (2/7) 6:2 2:6.
Next opponent Serbia or Kazakhstan
Croatia will travel to Madrid to participate in the semi-finals and will face Serbia, world number one Novak Djokovic or Kazakhstan in the international competition. The two teams will play each other in another quarter-final on Wednesday.
The Italians had to dispense with Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, who previously injured his stomach muscles at the ATP Finals in Turin in his opening match against Germany’s Alexander Zverev.
