Lego presented its first prototype of a brick made of recyclable plastic, which consists of plastic from discarded PET bottles.
An average one liter PET plastic bottle provides enough raw materials for ten of these stones.
Before the new stones reach the end user, some testing needs to be done. The next testing phase is expected to last at least a year.
Danish toy manufacturer Lego has presented its first prototype of a brick made of recyclable plastic. The white block in 2×4 format looks like a regular Lego brick, but is made of plastic from discarded PET bottles.
The building block giant said Wednesday that this is the first brick made from recycled materials that meet Lego’s stringent quality and safety requirements. An average one liter PET plastic bottle provides enough raw materials for ten of these stones.
Lego has always set itself the goal of making its products more sustainable. The biggest challenge along the way: Developing new materials that are durable, strong, and high-quality like the previous bricks that also match previous Lego products, explained Legos’ Vice President of Environmental Responsibility, Tim Brooks. According to the company, a team of more than 150 people is working on finding the right solutions.
Before the new stone finds its way into the Lego chests and thus into the children’s room, the prototype must undergo some testing. The next testing phase is expected to last at least a year. “Even if it takes a while before kids can play with stones made of recycled plastic, they should already know we’re working on it,” Brooks says.
