Russia unveils its own space station

Russia presented its own model of a space station. Moscow makes it clear that this cannot be used only for peaceful purposes.

Russia has presented a model of its own planned space station, fueling speculation about Russia’s exit from the International Space Station. The model presented by the Russian space agency Roscosmos at an arms and industrial exhibition near Moscow is referred to as “Ross” by Russian state media. According to current plans, the station will not be in operation all the time, but only twice a year for a longer period of time.

Roscosmos previously said that the station would give Russian cosmonauts a broader view of Earth for observational purposes than they currently have on the International Space Station. Dmitry Rogozin, the hardline former head of Roscosmos, hinted that the new space station could also serve a military purpose if necessary.

Russia wants to end cooperation with NASA

A few weeks ago, the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced that it had ended its cooperation with NASA and that it wanted to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) after 2024. According to NASA, the cooperation should continue until at least 2028.
