Avian influenza case reported in Guangdong Province, China
"All novel influenza A infections -- including H5N6 -- are notifiable diseases in Hong Kong," a DH spokesperson said. "Locally, we will remain vigilant and work closely with the World Health Organization (WHO) and relevant health authorities to monitor the latest developments. In view of cases confirmed on the mainland, members of the public should maintain good personal, food and environmental hygiene at all times during travel."
The patient is a 29-year-old individual from Bao’an, Shenzhen, who is currently listed in critical condition at a local hospital. The CHP recommends that citizens do not visit poultry farms and birds, avoiding poultry and droppings when possible. Poultry and egg products should be cooked thoroughly in order to prevent ingesting potentially infected meat. The CHP also recommends regular hand washing, especially prior to and after handling food or using the restroom.
Travelers that have returned from areas with reported cases of avian influenza and show respiratory symptoms are urged to wear masks to prevent the spread of the disease. Individuals with symptoms should seek medical services and inform physicians of their recent travel history.
