Smiths Detection signs agreement to develop better airport security

Smiths Detection, a security solutions company, announced on Wednesday that it signed an agreement with Optosecurity, a Canadian threat detection solutions developer, to improve security checkpoint performance and reduce costs.

Under the terms of the agreement, Smiths Detection and Optosecurity will develop and distribute an advanced checkpoint enterprise software solution. The new technology will allow airports to integrate checkpoint technologies for better process control and provide added capabilities like remote screening operations.

"The agreement leverages our global base of checkpoint products including X-rays, trace detectors, full body screening devices, and bottle screeners for liquid explosives with Optosecurity's advanced technology solutions, software development, and rapid implementation," Ian May, the vice president of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region of Smiths Detection, said. "It will improve airport checkpoint throughput and offer significant opportunities for operational benefits."

The agreement followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2013.

Smiths Detection offers security solutions to civil and military markets to help detect and identify CBRN threats, weapons, narcotics and contraband.

Optosecurity provides threat detection solutions for checkpoint security in airports and other critical infrastructure environments. The company offers centralized remote screening of hand luggage and provides software that can automatically detect liquid explosives and other threats.
