Secretary of Defense Hagel hosts ROK Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se

United States Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel met with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea Yun Byung-se at the Pentagon on Monday to reaffirm their nations' allegiance to one another.

Hagel and Yun spoke about the respective role their nations play in the U.S. ROK Alliance. The U.S. role is that of upholding peace, stability and security in the Asia-Pacific region. Hagel reaffirmed the U.S.' dedication to continue to play that role.

Hagel and Yun agreed that both the ROK and U.S. must continue to develop their defense in order to maintain the stability in the region. Hagel and Yun also agreed that the attainment of advanced military capabilities would be necessary to strengthen and preserve the defense position it holds in the region.

Hagel and Yun agreed that a critical component of upholding region security includes the maintenance and development of a broad range of defenses on the Korean Peninsula to deter provocation from North Korea. North Korea remains a great threat to the ROK and recently threatened the nation with the firing of ballistic missiles.

Hagel stressed the importance of the U.S.-ROK Alliance to the U.S. and confirmed that the U.S. is dedicated to ensuring the defense of the ROK.
