President of Croatia Ivo Josipovic visits OPCW

President of the Republic of Croatia Ivo Josipovic visited the headquarters of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons on Tuesday to meet with the OPCW Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu and senior staff members.

Uzumcu presented Josipovic with an overview of OPCW's implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, including the Joint OPCW-U.N. Mission in Syria to confirm and destroy the country's chemical weapon stores.

Uzumcu commended the Croatian president for his country's commitment to the convention and support of the OPCW. Josipovic assured Uzumcu that Croatia would continue to actively support the organization's goals. Croatia was one of the first States Parties to the CWC, and regularly organizes and participates in activities such as chemical safety and security, national CWC implementation, customs expertise and the OPCW Associate Programme.

Croatia served as a member of the OPCW's Executive Council from May 2011 to May 2013, and will host this year's annual Eastern European Group meeting. The meeting will include the CWC National Authorities of 25 Member States in the region. Croatia is also preparing to contribute to the elimination of the Syrian chemical weapons program.
