Kentucky appoints assistant director of emergency management

Kentucky Emergency Management (KYEM) recently appointed Richard "Rich" Knighten as its assistant director of operations.

"Rich Knighten brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to Kentucky Emergency Management and will be a great asset to the agency," KYEM Director Michael E. Dossett said. "His background, leadership capabilities and proven track record make him the right choice to lead operations."

After more than 40 years serving with federal, state and local governments, Knighten retired in 2009 as chief deputy U.S. Marshal. As part of his duties as a U.S. Marshal, he coordinated U.S. Marshals' response to disasters around the nation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

After retiring, Knighten served as chief deputy sheriff as well as area manager for KYEM. He holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and is a graduate of the Southern Institute's Administrative Officer's Course at the University of Louisville, in addition to holding a multitude of other leadership certifications.

Knighten expressed excitement for his continued interaction with KYEM.

"Having been a part of emergency management in the past, I know firsthand the role KYEM provides to Kentucky communities," Knighten said. "It is indeed an honor to return in this capacity and I look forward to being a part of the team."
