More breaking news

According to Home Secretary Nancy Visser (SPD), the federal government wants to support asylum procedures at the EU’s external borders and thus enable reform of European refugee policy. On Sunday evening, Wasser said on ARD’s “Report from Berlin” that a “major change” was emerging in European asylum policy. The SPD politician added that the Traffic Light Alliance has now agreed that “we want to strengthen this common asylum system”.

Concretely, the point is that “the asylum procedure can already take place at the border,” Weser explained. “This means that the registration, registration and identification of refugees will actually take place there,” the interior minister said. In the context of “reconciliation” within the European Union, “the solidarity of other countries” is required. Those who meet the conditions for asylum must then also be admitted.

Comprehensive reform of the European Union is pending

Since the refugee crisis of 2015, the European Union has failed to agree on a comprehensive reform of the European asylum system. Weser now sees an opportunity for Europe to move forward together on asylum policy. “We are now seeing a historic momentum where we can work with other European countries to launch a common asylum system on the ground, where asylum procedures take place at borders,” she said on the ARD programme.

Weser said it had been in talks with other EU countries about the details of the new measure for months. Germany works with France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Belgium and others. The processing time for asylum applications is being discussed up to a maximum of twelve weeks. (afp)
