With one last flight, the German military completed the German evacuation mission in Sudan on Tuesday evening. An appeal for the return of the emergency services in Wunstorf (region of Hanover) is scheduled for Friday.

The Operational Command announced on Twitter that another 120 people from besieged Sudan had been flown to Jordan. Preparing for a trip to Germany.

The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin announced earlier that “if other countries ensure the operation of air traffic, no further German evacuation flights from this area are planned.” The two ministries have announced that about 1,000 men and women who have been deployed will be transferred in the coming days. She added that the Germans remaining in Sudan who had not yet been able to come to the airport would be escorted by international partners on their evacuation flights in the next few days.

To date, the German Armed Forces have transported about 500 people

The Air Force has evacuated more than 600 people in the past few days. The federal government justified the military action in light of the tense security situation: fierce fighting has raged between the army and paramilitary forces in Sudan for more than a week.

Four Airbus A400Ms from Winstorf Air Force Base brought the evacuees to Jordan first. From Jordan, people headed to Berlin, where on Monday morning the first Bundeswehr A321 aircraft landed.

Sudan: Machinery from Wunstorf involved in the evacuation

On Sunday, the German army began evacuating from the besieged country in northeastern Africa. The Bundeswehr plane took off from the Al-Asrak area in Jordan towards Sudan and landed at an airport near the capital, Khartoum. The Bundeswehr uses Jordan as a hub. All seconded embassy personnel were on board the A400M.

In addition to the Germans, the German army also brought citizens of 20 other countries to safety, including Belgium, Great Britain, Jordan, Austria and some African countries. “The onward journey of the evacuees of third-country nationals will be coordinated with the respective countries,” the operational command said.

Other countries fly people too

Several other countries, including France, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, have also carried out evacuations. Two French military planes with about 200 people of different nationalities on board landed in Djibouti, East Africa. Spain also began evacuations on Sunday. In addition to 30 Spanish citizens, there were also 70 citizens of other countries on board, including Argentina, Portugal and Poland. Meanwhile, Egypt, Sudan’s northern neighbor, announced the evacuation of 436 citizens by land.

Fighting in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces

In Sudan, units of the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have been fighting each other for more than a week. The agreement to integrate the Rapid Support Forces into the armed forces had failed in the past. More than 420 people have been killed and 3,700 wounded in the fighting. Many ceasefire agreements have been broken.

The rescue mission had to be aborted on Wednesday

Already on Wednesday, three A400M military tankers from Wunstorf unsuccessfully embarked on a rescue mission in Sudan. Due to the tense situation, they had to turn back.
