Germany’s retail sector expects record sales in the next two days of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday discount campaign. Overall, consumers are likely to spend around 4.9 billion euros searching for deals at the end of November, the German Retail Association (HDE) forecast on Tuesday. Compared to the previous year, this means an increase of 27 percent. Black Friday takes place on November 26 this year, and Cyber Monday three days later on November 29.

“On Black Friday and Monday, more and more customers are discovering the internet for themselves,” said Stefan Tromp, deputy general manager of HDE. According to a survey by the Institute for Retail Research (IFH) in Cologne, almost every Black Friday online shopper this year wants to go in the hunt for bargains. Almost every third person is planning a Cyber Monday shopping spree.

According to HDE, the significance of two working days, originally from the US, for the Christmas business is now huge. It is expected that around 1.2 billion euros will be purchased for Christmas gifts this year as part of the two working days. “This means that gift buying is increasingly shifting a little bit forward,” Trump said.
