Possible Measles Exposure at Washington, D.C. Airports
Health officials in Washington, D.C. are on high alert after a person with a confirmed case of measles traveled through two major airports in the region. The potential exposure occurred at Dulles International Airport on January 3, between 4 and 8 p.m., and at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on January 4, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Virginia Department of Health had also issued a similar warning before the D.C. health officials.
Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, spreads easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms of measles usually appear in two stages. The first stage includes fever, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a cough. The second stage begins 3 to 5 days after symptoms start when a rash appears on the face and spreads to the body.
Health authorities have urged individuals who might have been exposed to be vigilant and watch for symptoms until January 25. If any symptoms occur, they should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Additionally, people are advised to call ahead before going to a healthcare provider’s office or the emergency room to inform them about potential measles exposure.
Unfortunately, it is currently unknown which airline the infected person was traveling on. This lack of information has added challenges for health agencies in tracking down individuals who may have been in close proximity to the infected person during their travel.
