King Charles III will have a shorter surname in Canada than his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. A statement is available from the Canadian government.

The Canadian Parliament bears the official title of King Charles III. change as head of state. From now on, he no longer bore the title of “defender of the faith.” This was reported, among other things, by the news portal “CBC”. Accordingly, the change in Canadian law regarding the title and address of the royal office was mentioned last month, but has yet to be determined.

Now the exact wording has been announced. The official title is Charles III, by the grace of God King of Canada and its Other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth. Translated into German: “Charles III is, by the grace of God, King of Canada and its Provinces and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth.”

The law was previously amended in 1985, after which Queen Elizabeth II still wore the Defender of the Faith addition. In addition, “Queen of the United Kingdom” was included in her Canadian name, which has also now been omitted.

Bill Blair, director of communications for the Royal Council, said: “As we prepare for the coronation of the new monarch, a decision has been taken to update the title.” The classification has been ‘harmonized’ with other Commonwealth countries such as Australia.

The term “defender of the faith” has been under discussion for several years. It was originally introduced in the 16th century when the title was formally conferred by Pope Leo X, who died in 1521, to King Henry VIII, who died in 1547. A Buckingham Palace spokesman told CBC that the decision on the monarch’s royal title “A matter of the Canadian government.” The royal family was informed of the change in advance as a courtesy, an insider reported.
