Assessing the $50 Upgrade: Pixel 8s Enhanced Fingerprint Sensor

Google’s highly anticipated Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are set to hit the market soon, and leaks have already provided a glimpse into their design and specifications. According to notable leaker Yogesh Brar, the Pixel 8 will come with a price increase, with a starting price of $649. This marks the first price hike for Pixel phones since the debut of Google’s Tensor silicon.

The Pixel 8 is expected to come with a 6.17″ FHD+ OLED display boasting a 120Hz refresh rate. Powered by the Google Tensor G3 SoC, the phone will offer 8GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 128GB to 256GB. In terms of camera capabilities, rumors suggest it will have a 50MP main shooter with optical image stabilization, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and an 11MP selfie camera. Running on Android 14, the phone will also feature an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

However, the increase in the base price of the Pixel 8 may not sit well with consumers, considering the historical price range of Pixel phones. This price adjustment follows a trend in the industry, as other tech giants like Samsung and Apple have also adjusted the prices of their high-end models to reflect inflation.

The inclusion of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner may be a driving factor behind the price increase, as it offers enhanced accuracy and speed compared to the optical scanner found in previous models. A recent poll conducted by Android Authority revealed that consumers are divided in their response to the price increase, with some expressing acceptance of a $50 hike, while others are willing to pay up to $100 more.

Ultimately, the perceived value of the upgrades and the impact of rising costs and inflation will determine how customers feel about the price hike. While the Pixel 8 series is expected to offer noteworthy enhancements, those who have experienced frustrations with Pixel phones in the past may be deterred by the price increase. As the launch date of the Pixel 8 approaches, it remains to be seen how the broader audience will respond to this price adjustment.
