Second division football team Werder Bremen missed their eighth win in a row on Saturday. Against FC Ingolstadt, it was enough for Bremen to draw 1-1 (0-0).

by Martin Schneider

Werder Bremen’s 15,000 fans were shocked in the 85th minute. They waited patiently in their home stadium for a dear compensating goal against the Ingolstadt defence. And when Niklas Volkrug shook the field with a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute, all seemed to be going well for the Greens and Whites on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Then came Philippe Belbega. The FCI offensive player scored 1-1 and ended all climbing hopes of Weser for an eighth straight win. With the eighth success in a row after taking over, coach Ole Werner would have achieved it Equals the record set by Otto Rehhagel in 1981. Despite the draw, Bremen managed to temporarily jump to the top of the table in the second division, where HSV also played only 1-1 at Sandhausen.

Of course we are disappointed. Basically, we didn’t play good football for 90 minutes and we didn’t play well.

Deep turf and challenging game for Werder

This was a difficult match expected for North Germany from the start. Ingolstadt started early and constantly defended, never letting green eggs develop. It wasn’t until the 20th minute before the Hanseatic League had its first chance to score – and it stands to reason that it was a long-range shot from Romano Schmid, which FCI goalkeeper Dejan Stojanovic veered over the bar.

On the field, which has been flooded with rain for the past few days, the hosts had more possession of the ball, but they had to develop offensive moves in the truest sense of the word. Nikolai Raab missed Bremen’s lead by a narrow margin in the 26th minute and later through Folkrug with a header over the crossbar (40).

Ingolstadt responded quickly

But there was no question about one-way football in the first half, on the contrary: the guests were very dangerous on the counter-attack and in some cases engulfed the forward midfield of Bremen. Belbija twice moved to the bottom of the table by foot (36, 41), but only luck, and Werder goalkeeper Jerry Pavlenka saved SVW from being late.

Bremen bites her teeth

Werder pushed for the opening goal in the second half, but developed some hilarious ideas and solutions. The guests were easily able to defend the standards and high balls to Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch. Long-range shots often lack the necessary accuracy. Minutes passed and things became crowded on the pitch. Rapp crossed from the right side, and in the middle Folkrug got a push and fell to the ground. Protests from Bremen, but referee Robert Kampka refused to discuss.

Then the hosts cheered. Volkrug fired himself into the Ingolstadt penalty area after one of his many passes and headed a header in a deserved lead in the 75th minute. But that only lasted ten minutes, Belbijja escaped Omar Toprak and destroyed Green White’s winning side with a goal to equalize 1-1. They eventually ran again, but did not score for the win.
