Vaccination against covid-19 | Targeted at people aged 60 or over and vulnerable people at the end of summer

The new COVID-19 vaccination campaign from the end of the summer should target people over 60 and those at risk, the Commission on Immunization of Quebec (CIQ) recommended in a notice published on Monday.

These are five groups that should receive a booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at the end of the summer, namely people 60 years of age or older, those who live with a chronic disease, those who are immunocompromised or on dialysis, and health workers Health care, pregnant women and persons. Living in remote areas, defends CIQ.

A booster dose may be administered to the rest of the population “once the priority groups are appropriately reached,” the CIQ opinion adds.

This vaccination is recommended whether people have already received one, two, three, or even four doses of the vaccine. The important thing is that there is at least a three-month interval between the two doses, or between infection with the COVID-19 virus and vaccination.

It should be noted that the advent of a vaccine adapted to the Omicron variant could change the situation and CIQ recommendations.

Three basic doses

The CIQ also specifies that the “basic” vaccination against COVID-19 – the number of doses that allows a person to protect against disease – is three doses for adults who have never had the disease. These are two initial doses and a first booster dose.

“This basic vaccination makes it possible to develop satisfactory protection against serious COVID-19 infection in a context where Omicron is the predominant alternative, details CIQ. Subsequent doses are intended to restore immunity that may wane over time.”

So far, residents of Quebec are considered adequately immune to COVID-19 after two doses of the vaccine.
