A few months before the scheduled new elections, Slovakia’s interim Prime Minister Heger announced his resignation. He cited disagreements with President Caputova as the reason.

Acting Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger has announced that he will vacate his post. Heger said he asked President Zuzana Caputova to relieve him of his duties.

According to him, the reason is that Caputova did not accept any of his suggestions on how he should lead the government in the current crisis. Heger explained that with his resignation, he wanted to give Caputova the opportunity to form a government of civil servants until the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 30.

The conservative populist government did not survive a vote of no confidence in Parliament.

Heger ordered new elections

His conservative, populist government lost a majority in parliament last summer and was ousted in a vote of no confidence in December. Since then, Heger has continued to conduct official business on behalf of the president – albeit with limited powers.

Caputova tasked Heger with enabling new elections to be held in due course. However, the acting head of government postponed it until September – according to opinion polls, he is threatened with a serious defeat. In the past few days, Heger’s position has also been weakened by the resignation of two ministers.

At the beginning of March, the politician announced that he was leaving Olano’s party and creating a new center-right group called the Democrats. Four other cabinet members from Heger’s former party were among the founding members.

Heger’s government is among the most determined military supporters of Ukraine. This issue is one of the few in which the provisional government, the president and the majority in parliament come to a common denominator. Heger has repeatedly warned that the new election could also strengthen forces that question Ukraine’s military support. He warned that the Social Democrats, whom he criticized as corrupt, could come to power.
