The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced last week that a contract has been awarded to Biomatrica Inc. to develop biotechnology for defense purposes.

This contract supports the efforts of the Biological Technologies Office (BTO) within DARPA. The BTO focuses on biology and technology within several disciplines that includes development in synthetic biology, human performance, interfaces that facilitate human and machine interaction and countermeasure development for infectious and emerging diseases.

The contract is valued at $246,250. The awardee company is focused on the development of research and diagnostic solutions including pre-analytical products, testing assays and sample stabilization products for cells, proteins and assays to be utilized in testing.

Among the company’s offerings in pre-analytics are products that offer collection and processing of genetic information that is collected from samples that can include blood, tissue and saliva. The company offers DNA collection products for these sample types and RNA collection from blood samples.

Biomatrica offers enhancing technologies for testing assays that utilize polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and short tandem repeat (STR) analysis. The company also offers computer software that allows sample tracking capability for laboratory management purposes.
