Leading threat detection company supports Blue Ribbon Panel Study on Biodefense
Since the report, many industries have become aware of how important their role is in contributing to this growing need for security. The Blue Ribbon Panel outlined its recommendations to establish a plan for centralized leadership for American biodefense, but it has taken a while for this plan to be adopted.
“The biodefense problem is very complex, and there have been differing ideas within the government as to how to tackle the threat," Dr. Mary Beth Tabacco told Bio Prep Watch. "Tough tradeoffs remain in terms of level of security, tolerance for false alarms, and acceptable information content to inform military or civilian real-time security decisions.”
Tabacco is the vice president of science and technology at Smiths Detection.
The leaders in the American biodefense sector start with the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security, which “have continued to lead the way in terms of defining our biodefense strategy,” Tabacco said. “These programs and initiatives have resulted in fielding of very promising technologies as offered by BioFire Diagnostics, as part of the JBAIDS program, and also highly effective, early warning enabling technologies offered by Research International, Inc.”
Anthrax is the most commonly cited bio-terror agent, and Tabacco explained that anthrax “continues to be a high priority threat due to its relative ease of preparation and environmental persistence.”
People should also be aware that there are other bio-threats.
“Looking ahead, the broad scope of emerging threats poses additional burdens on biodefense initiatives,” Tabacco said. “In particular, genetically altered bio-agents, new dissemination modalities and the potential use of biochemical agents and incapacitants capable of mass disruption should be high priority concerns.”
