Smiths Detection announces three green sustainability initiatives

Explosives, chemical and biohazard detection company Smiths Detection Inc. (SDI) launched three environmentally green initiatives Wednesday.

SDI partnered with the Regional Manufacturing Energy Conservation Program, which allows the company to have engineering consultations in order to optimize their energy consumption.

The company’s Edgewood site was also accepted into the Md. Green Registry, which features organizations that utilize sustainable practices in their operations in the state. This distinction recognizes the site's current sustainable practices and planned conservation efforts.

SDI's final initiative includes the establishment of a company Green Team; this group of employees will help develop ideas to improve energy and water usage and to help in managing waste matter.

Of the company's continued green focus, SDI President Terry Gibson said, “SDI has focused on implementing environmentally responsible conservation practices, and these latest initiatives enrich our practices as a socially responsible corporation. Inclusion of employees’ stewardship for sustainability will set a new bar for other organizations to follow as it demonstrates a culture dedicated to continuous improvement in all facets of operations.”
