OPCW Director-General Üzümcü visits Portugal

Director-general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Üzümcü visited Portugal this week to discuss the ongoing mission in Syria and update officials on its progress.

He also acknowledged the country's efforts and contributions toward the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), specifically noting the training and assistance activity that Portugal has completed with Lusophone member states.

Both parties also discussed the possibilities of increasing cooperation between the OPCW and Portugal. Those who were involved in this meeting included: Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Rui Machete; permanent representative of Portugal to the OPCW José Bouza Serrano; head of the directorate for Security and Defense Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rui Carmo; and director-general of Foreign Policy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Francisco Duarte.

During his visit, Üzümcü also met with permanent representatives of the member states to the Comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa. The director-general also made a visit to the Laboratory of Toxicology and Chemical Defense of the Army and gave a lecture at the Institute for Political Studies and Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Lisbon.
