The Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (PEO ACWA), announced Wednesday that Gary McCloskey has been selected to manage the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Colorado.

McCloskey most recently worked with the Tooele Chemical Agent Disposal Facility in Utah's Deseret Chemical Depot. According to the PEO ACWA, the facility had officially eliminated approximately 1.1 million munitions and approximately 13,600 tons of chemical agents.

In his new assignment, McCloskey will oversee and facilitate integration of all efforts to eliminate the Pueblo chemical weapons stockpile in a safe and compliant manner, including the elimination of related explosives and waste materials.

He will also be tasked with the development of staff at the pilot plant through mentorship, training, education and developmental assignments.

“We have excellent programs which encourage both employee and management involvement in keeping our people safe, and we need to continue to build on this foundation as we transition into agent operations,” McCloskey said. “While we have legacy facility issues to resolve, our people are ready to start destruction activities and will begin operations at the highest level of readiness in program history.”

McCloskey said the staff of the Pueblo facility is experienced in operations involving the neutralization and elimination of volatile chemical weapons.

"The team assembled to execute the project is extremely talented,” McCloskey said. “We will go into operations with 60 percent of our operational workforce having been involved at chemical agent operations at some combination of the seven other facilities which have completed operations and closure.”
