U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of N.Y. Preet Bharara, Assistant Director-in-Charge of the N.Y. Field Office of the FBI Diego Rodriguez and N.Y. Police Department (NYPD) Officer William Bratton stated in a joint announcement that Jason Smith was arrested in Texas.
According to the report, Smith had allegedly utilized a service for those that are hard-of-hearing on an iPad to contact emergency services stating that he was an ISIS Terrorist and that they were preparing to detonate bombs at the statue. In the communication Smith used an alias, Abdul Yasin.
Law enforcement and canine units sent to Liberty Island searched for the alleged bombs, but it was found to be a hoax.
Smith has been charged with one count of conveying false and misleading information, which would have a maximum penalty of five years as prescribed by Congress.
They also report that Smith's iPad had been used to contact an individual using the alias "Isis Allah bomb maker," who has made threats to attack Times Square and to attack officers on Brooklyn Bridge.
Prosecution of this case will be managed by Assistant U.S. Attorney, David Zhou, and the FBI Office's Terrorism and International Narcotics Unit.
