OPCW Director-General Uzumcu meets with Slovenian officials

Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu met with top Slovenian officials and students during his visit to Slovenia from Sunday to Tuesday.

During the visit, Uzumcu met with Minister of Defense Andreja Katie, Minister of Health Milojka Celarc, State Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Benko, Director of the Chemicals Office of the Republic of Slovenia Alojz Grabner and Chief of the General Staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces Andreij Osterman.
Uzumcu also gave a lecture to faculty, diplomats and students at the University of Ljubljana on the OPCW's efforts in nonproliferation activity. Uzumcu also noted the importance of connecting with educational institutions.
"We want future generations of diplomats, scientists and engineers to remain seized of the potential for chemistry to be misused,” Uzumcu said. “I firmly believe that it is a core responsibility of the OPCW to work with state parties to engage centers of scientific discovery and innovation to this end.”

The main focus of Uzumcu's visit was to take part in the 14th Regional Meeting of National Authorities in Eastern Europe that brought 30 representatives from 22 countries in the region. The focus of the meeting was to discuss Chemical Weapons Convention implementation.
