Humanitarian conference continues in SIngapore

The Ministry of Defense of Singapore and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) announced they are co-hosting the World Humanitarian Summit through Wednesday.

The forum at the Changi Command and Control Center will focus on the coordination between military and civil society in regards to humanitarian issues. A large portion of the forum will cover and develop efficient response to disasters on national, regional or international levels that require military and civil collaboration.

“Evolving a military doctrine for non-traditional security threats, scoping our operations, and maximizing our efforts therefore have been the focus of SAF efforts in recent years,” Singapore Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen said.

Hen used the implementation of the Changi center's activity as a platform to enhance intramilitary coordination for relief and response efforts across Asia-Pacific countries. He also said the Singapore Armed Forces have increased cooperative activity with local organizations including the Red Cross of Singapore and Mercy Relief.

According to the announcement, over 100 policy makers from around the world and experts from the United Nations and international organizations are in attendance.

“Humanitarian civil-military coordination plays a vital role in the exchange of data, information and knowledge among multiple stakeholders," Ambassador Toni Frisch, chair of the Global Consultative Group on Civil Military Coordination, said. "Military participation is equally critical for successfully establishing a shared situational awareness."
